By Sylvia Okoi In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, the Cross River State Government has urged stakeholders and residents to join the global fight against plastic pollution, striving for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable State. Speaking during the celebrations held at the Metropolitan Hotel in Calabar, Governor Bassey Edet Otu addressed the detrimental environmental challenges caused by years of indiscriminate use and improper disposal of single-use plastics.  He highlighted that plastic waste has led to increased flooding, soil degradation, public health risks, and the defacement of both urban and rural landscapes. Speaking during his visit as part of the May edition of the State-Wide monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise, he described the uncleanliness of the institution as "appalling." Worried about the unhygienic state of the students' living spaces, Hon. Osogi asserted that the University of Calabar is falling short in its environmental practices, emphasizing the government's readiness to supporting the Institution in improving living conditions for students. The Leader of the Etung Legislative Council, Hon.ThankGod Ekpunse recently organized a solemn assembly and a general community meeting for the Abia Clan, marking the first of such gatherings for the year.  The well attended meeting brought together respected traditional and community leaders, including Ntufam Peter Okongor; Ntufam Mathew Ojong Tawor, Acting Clan Head; Ntunkae Ma Alice Akor, Women Chief; Ntufam Augustine Obi; Mrs. Victoria Njar, CRO Etung LGA; Mr. Cyrus Akor; Amb. The Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Hon. Boniface Okache, on friday 11th, April 2025, attended the funeral service of the late Paramount Ruler of Yala Local Government Area, His Royal Highness Ogamode Onah Ipuole, held at Oba, Okpoma in Yala LGA. Hon. Okache, known for his close relationship with the late monarch, other traditional leaders and indigenes of the community, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. He described the late HRH Ogamode Onah Ipuole as a visionary, veracious and dedicated leader whose contributions to the development of Yala and its people remain indelible. He further noted that the revered ruler’s legacy would serve as a beacon for future generations, and he prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul. Hon. Okache was accompanied to the ceremony by his political associates and close allies.
