Journalists Commend CRSG On Environmental Strides
In celebration of the 2024 Press Freedom Day with the theme: A press for planet, journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis, Journalists in Cross River State have used the occasion to pour commendation on the State Government for the visible strides in the Environmental sector.
During an interactive session held at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Center, State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists as part of activities to mark the Day, various media houses applauded the Ministry of Environment under the leadership of Commissioner Moses Osogi for implementing major environmental initiatives in line with the People First agenda of His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.
In separate remarks, they noted that the introduction of the monthly statewide environmental sanitation which has been observed religiously has improved the outlook of the State and yielded inadvertent results of imbibing a good environmental culture amongst citizens.
Earlier in his remarks, the commissioner for information Mr. Erasmus Ekpang applauded the efforts of journalist in dissemination of information. Acknowledging the need for training and retraining of journalist in the environment sector to meet up with global standards of science reporting, Mr. Ekpang stated that the state Government will continue to strive harder in ensuring that Environmental degredation in the state is reduced to the barest minimum.
World press freedom day is celebrated annually on the 3rd of May to create awareness on press freedom and to remind Government of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom.
This year's celebration seeks to address the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global Environmental crisis with cognisance to journalism practice as being indispensable for this purpose.
The brief ceremony was also attended by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity , Mr. Linus Ogobo, Chief Press secretary, Mr. Gill Nsa, Deputy Chief Press Secretary, General Manager Cross River Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Sam Nsor, and other practicing Journalists in the state.
